Biggest zoo in Romania will be included on global zoos map

29 September 2016

The Targu Mures Zoo, Romania's biggest, will be included on the world map of zoos starting this month, according to the institution's director Horatiu Gorea.

It will be the first Romanian zoo to have a place on the global map.

“The new catalog with the world’s zoos will appear in September, and the zoo in Targu Mures will also appear on the new map, being the only local zoo to be included in it. The first and only in Romania,” Gorea said, reports local Agerpres.

The zoo in Targu Mures, which hosts around 500 animals from 80 species, was established in the 60s. It covers more than 40 hectares, and attracts over 200,000 visitors annually.

The zoo has been modernized in the last three years, benefiting from a European financing of more than EUR 4 million. The Targu Mures City Hall manages it.

Besides investments in infrastructure and new animals, the zoo’s staff also received a special training carried out by international experts from The Shape of Enrichment INC and the European Association of Zoos.

Located on Verii Street (Summer Street) in Targu Mures, the zoo can be visited daily between 09:00 and 20:00. Tickets cost RON 15 (EUR 3.37) for adults, and RON 3 (EUR 0.67) for children, students, and pensioners. The zoo also sells special tickets for families. For example, a family made of two adults and two children will pay RON 32 (EUR 7.2) to visit the zoo.
