Romanians abroad enjoy tons of food sent by their families back home
Romanians who work abroad usually send home packages of food and clothes, and last year sent some 12,000 tons – or some 790,000 packages- to their home country, according to data from courier service provider Posta Atlassib.
Food seems to be among the things Romanians like to send and receive the most: families too send Romanians who work abroad packages of food, especially traditional food, during the holidays. Over 1,800 Romanians sent food packages, on average weighting 15 kilograms, for their family members abroad on January 5, 2015. Packages usually contain traditional food, and home-made plum brandy and wine, according to data from Atlassib, quoted by Agerpres. By law, each package sent abroad can contain a liter of plum brandy or two liters of wine.
During 2014, Romanians sent their relatives who work abroad over 285,000 packages via Atlassib, some 4,200 tons. These alone brought the company some EUR 4 million in revenues, according to Agerpres.
Among the main destinations for Romanian food packages are Padua and Rome and Italy, and Barcelona in Spain. Romanians in Barcelona get some 26,000 packages a year from their families back home, while those in Padua, 54,000 packages, according to Posta Atlassib.
Still, the bulk of the sendings are directed to Romania from abroad. The 790,000 packages sent to Romania last year brought the company some EUR 13.2 million. Of this amount, EUR 2.6 million were for half a million packages destined for Bucharest alone. Romanians in Italy are among those who send the biggest number of packages home.
Posta Atlassib is part of the Atlassib Holding, which also organizes bus rides to main European destinations. Postal deliveries are sent either by Atlassib’s buses, or with its trucks.
