Romanians working abroad have sent EUR 1.85 billion in remittances to their home country, in the first half of this year.

The sum is 7% higher compared to the same period of 2013 and is also the highest level in the last five years, according to data from Romania’s National Bank (BNR). This makes Romanians working abroad the largest source of capital inflows to the country and the largest investors in the local economy.

Foreign investments were EUR 1.2 billion in the same period, while the Romanian state has spent only EUR 1.1 billion in the first six months.
