Romanians brace themselves for one of the coldest New Year's Eve nights in half a century
Temperatures are poised to go further down in Romania as a new year approaches. The weather station recorded -31 degrees Celsius on December 31 in the morning at Intorsatura Buzaului, in Covasna county.
Low temperatures were recorded throughout the Covasna county: -20 degrees Celsius in Sfantu Gheorghe, -18 degrees Celsius in Baraolt and -17 degrees Celsius in Targu Secuiesc.
According to meteorologists, the cold weather is caused by a mass of polar air that crosses Eastern Europe. The frost will persist in the coming days.
On New Year's Eve, the temperature will drop below -25 degrees Celsius. "We can talk about one of the coldest New Year's Eve nights in the last 50 years," said meteorologist Meda Andrei, quoted by Digi24.
The lowest temperature ever recorded in Romania was registered in January 1942 in Bod, Brasov county, -38.5 degrees Celsius.
