Romanians used their cards to make over a million tax payments worth RON 360 million (EUR 79 million) in 2016.

The payments were made online or at the local tax office counters, according to a press release issued by Visa yesterday.

The number of online tax payments doubled last year compared to 2015. It represented a third of the total tax payments by card. Over 370,000 payments were made online, and their value reached RON 78 million (EUR 17.1 million).

The value of tax payments by card increased almost ten times in the last six years. The average value of a payment amounted to almost RON 340 (EUR 74.6) in 2016, according to Visa.

All the public institutions that collect taxes or fines are obliged to accept card payments. The deadline for implementing the law’s new provisions is the end of 2018. The new Government promised that any tax that can’t be paid online will be cancelled.
