Romanians working abroad put aside EUR 12 bln, study shows

The number of Romanian immigrants was estimated at 3 million, their total estimated savings over 12 months, calculated by September 2010, being of EUR 12 billion, of which EUR 3 billion was sent to the country, shows the studyMaximizing the Development Impact of Migration”, developed by the International Agency for Source Country Information (IASCI) in partnership with the Soros Foundation Romania.

In Romania, monthly income per household in 2010 was of EUR 1,896, the gross annual savings per household reaching EUR 11,172. Monthly expenditure per household was of EUR 965, while the monthly saving per household amounted to EUR 931.

The annual amount of remittances per household amounted to EUR 2,157, while the annual savings per household abroad reached EUR 9,015. Romanians’ annual savings abroad amounted to EUR 12 billion, while the total remittances were of EUR 2.8 billion annually, according to the study.
