Romania's Antena Group shifts from sports to youth and music with new Zu TV station launch

03 April 2014

Romanian media company Antena Group on Thursday launched its new Zu TV station, replacing the former sports TV channel GSP TV. The new channel represents a spinoff of the existing Radio Zu, owned by the same group.

The new channel will address a young audience, and plans to broadcast the most important international music events, among others. The kick off event will be the Zu Music Awards (ZUMA) show scheduled for Thursday evening (April 3) at Romexpo in Bucharest.

The shift and re-branding the former GSP TV into ZU TV was approved by the Romanian audiovisual watchdog in February this year. The TV channel is a 'must carry',  meaning cable operators in Romania have to include it among the channels they broadcast, which is why before approval, some members of the audiovisual watchdog were against the switch, saying a new license would have been required.

Antena Group runs several TV stations in Romania, among which Antena 1, Antena 3, Antena Stars – also a recent re-branding, Radio Zu and Romantic FM, the print publications Jurnalul National daily, the sports daily Gazeta Sporturilor, and BBC Science and BBC Good Food.
