Romania's communication authority launches Internet speed testing app

09 October 2014

Romania’s communication authority ANCOM recently launched a website, Netograf.ro, which tests and monitors the Internet connection quality. Romanian Internet users will be able to measure the data transfer speed, the transfer delay and packet loss ratio compared to those in the telecom operator’s commercial offer.

Netograf.ro was launched for public testing, with offers from Internet providers being currently uploaded.

According to Catalin Marinescu, president of ANCOM, internet users “will be able not only to verify whether their internet service is up to the promised quality, but also to compare the registered parameters with the parameters obtained by the subscribers of other providers”.

The app tests the connection quality between the final user and a test server from an internet interexchange hub. To test these parameters, the users have to select the provider, the type of offer they benefit from and the type of connection.

The authorized internet providers have to upload the technical details of their active commercial offers in the app using a web interface. The app’s database currently includes the offers of some of the main operators on the market, but it will be permanently updated and improved based on the feed-back received from its users.

Internet usage in Romania, still the lowest in the EU.
