Romania’s Constitutional Court rules that special pensions law is unconstitutional
Romania’s Constitutional Court (CCR) has once again decided that the law granting special pensions to local representatives was unconstitutional.
The CCR thus admitted the Government’s notification, which pointed out that the law didn’t respect the Constitution.
It is not the first time when the Constitutional Court declares this law unconstitutional.
The saga began in December last year, when the Parliament’s upper chamber passed a law which provided that mayors, deputy mayors, as well as county council presidents and vice-presidents were entitled to a special pension at the end of their terms, in addition to the regular pension.
The Government challenged the law and sent a notification to the Constitutional Court. In January this year, the CCR admitted the Government’s notification and said that the provisions on the special pensions were unconstitutional.
The law returned to the Parliament, which approved it again keeping it almost in the same form. That led to a new action of the Government, which challenged it at the Constitutional Court in June this year.
