09 March 2017

The sales of cosmetics and perfumes in Romania exceeded RON 5.5 billion (EUR 1.2 billion) last year, but the market hasn’t reached its maximum potential, according to an analysis published by local financial consultancy firm KeysFin yesterday.

In Romania, people spend on average about EUR 40 every year per capita on cosmetics and perfumes whereas in France the amount is four-five times higher.

The cosmetics and perfumes market in Romania went up from RON 4.2 billion in 2009 to RON 5.28 billion in 2015, according to KeysFin data. The sector includes about 2,000 companies with over 11,000 employees. Their number has remained steady since 2009 until the present, which shows that the market is well-defined.

The sector’s profitability rose from RON 207 million in 2009 to RON 258 million (EUR 56.7 million) in 2015, with a strong growth estimated in 2016 as well. People in Romania acquire most of the cosmetics products in physical stores, followed by pharmacies, and cosmetics saloons. The online sales have significantly increased in the last 2-3 years.

Perfumes generate the largest turnover of this market, followed by make-up products and skin care products. In the Western countries, skin-care products are the best-selling products.
