Wall Street Journal: Romania's economic freedom has worsened

13 January 2012

Romania's economic freedom worsened in the last year, but the country still climbed a position from 63 last year to 62 this year in the Wall Street Journal chart for 179 countries around the world.

Romania's economic score, calculated on a scale from 0 to 100, fell from last year by 0.3 to 64.4 points, reflecting a greater impact of corruption and state expenditure management deterioration, according to the study produced in partnership with the Heritage Foundation.

The score for economic freedom is calculated on ten criteria. Five were worse last year in Romania, two improved, and three remained unchanged.

Freedom from corruption, government spending, business freedom, monetary freedom and commercial freedom showed worsening scores, while fiscal freedom and the labor market scores improved. Scores for property rights, financial freedom and the freedom to invest stayed the same in Romania last year.
