Romania’s Government approves investment plans for two hospitals in Bucharest

25 August 2016

Two important hospitals in Bucharest will be expanded or relocated via public-private partnerships, the Government decided yesterday.

The Children Emergency Hospital “Maria Sklodowska Curie” will be expanded with a new building and will become a regional hospital. The Cardiovascular Disease Emergency Hospital “Prof. Dr.C.C. Iliescu” will be relocated in a new building, as it now operates in a high seismic risk location.

The new hospital buildings will be developed and operated by private companies based on a yearly fee, but the medical services will continue to be provided by the state, health minister Vlad Voiculescu said on Wednesday.

He estimates that the investment in each of the two hospitals will be up to EUR 100 million.

The construction work on the two hospitals should start in the first half of 2017 and should be completed in 2-3 years.

Romania’s Finance Ministry and Health Ministry will get consultancy from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for preparing, attributing, and implementing the two projects.
