Romanian tennis player Simona Halep reached the third round of the 2015 Rogers Cup tournament in Toronto after beating former World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic in straight sets. The final score was 6-3, 6-4.

It was Simona’s first official match since being ousted in the first round of Wimbledon in July.

"I tried to be aggressive and take the ball as soon as possible, because I know she has good defense. And I tried to keep my first serves in because she returns well, too. And I also tried to play her forehand more, because she has a very strong backhand,” Halep said, cited by WTA.com.

"I feel happy that I could win in two sets - I always played about three hours with her and always had tough matches," she added.

No.2 seed Simona Halep will meet No. 13 seed Angelique Kerber in the third round, who beat Puerto Rican qualifier Monica Puig 6-2, 6-3. Halep has beaten Kerber in both previous meetings, though they haven’t met in over a year.

The Rogers Cup takes place in Toronto, Canada, and will end on August 16. The tournament has total prizes of USD 2.37 million.
