Romania’s high altitude road Transfagarasan might stay closed only three months a year
Romania’s mountain road Transfagarasan might stay closed only three months a year following major works scheduled to start this year, according to the minister of transport Dan Sova and representatives of the road’s authority CNADNR, reports local Mediafax.
“On DN 7C - Transfagarasan we have a series of repair works on the surface, like unblocking the ditches and channels. Of course the Transfagarasan requires larger works. It’s a series of protection works that might help keep the road open for more than only four months a year,” said Sova.
Adriana Nicula, the Brasov regional director of CNADNR, added that a contract was already concluded with a company from Portugal that will conduct extensive work on the north side of Fagaras mountains, in Sibiu county, between Balea Cascada and Balea Lac.
Work on Transfagarasan, in Sibiu county, will start in June and take 24 months.
“Work will be conducted with traffic restrictions, but the Transfagarasan will not be closed. There are two years of actual work, but work will be carried out only six months a year, so actually there will be around four years. When the work will be completed, we hope Transfagarasan will be closed maximum three months per year,” said Nicula, quoted by local Mediafax.
The road is currently closed for traffic between November 1 and July 1.
