The Government led by interim Prime Minister Gabriel Oprea adopted last week a decision which supplements the number of anti-corruption prosecutors by 50.

Laura Codruta Kovesi, the head of Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), requested in February that the number of prosecutors increase by 50, due to the growing number of cases DNA had under investigation. The work volume has tripled since the institution was founded, Kovesi said, reports local Hotnews.ro.

“Although prosecutors solve more and more cases annually, the growth rate is accelerating. We have to solve over 5,000 cases.”

The Government didn’t approve Kovesi’s request to increase the number of prosecutors as long as Victor Ponta was in charge. Ponta himself as well as his family and friends are targeted by DNA investigations.

President Klaus Iohannis signed on June 22 the decree appointing Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea as interim prime minister, for the period in which Prime Minister Victor Ponta can’t exercise his attributions due to health problems.
