Romania’s Sighisoara risks exclusion from the list of UNESCO sites

03 March 2015

Romania’s fortified medieval town Sighisoara risks exclusion from the list of UNESCO sites, according to specialists.

The 800-year old city can reach UNESCO’s red list and then be excluded from the World Heritage if interventions in this UNESCO site will still be done without notice and without complying with the historical monuments, according to Razvan Sipos, chief architect of Mures county, cited by local Digi24.

According to experts, the main problems relate to improper facade renovations, installation of insulated windows and even the construction of annexes without notice.

UNESCO included Sighisoara on its list mainly due to the town's authenticity, an attribute that is now threatened by this sort of renovations.
