Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, currently number 2 in the WTA ranking of the best women’s tennis players in the world, qualified into the semifinals of the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, for the first time in her career.

Halep beat Belarussian Victoria Azarenka, on Wednesday, after three sets ended 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The match between the two was interrupted for about one hour because of the rain.

Halep returns to the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament after more than one year. In 2014, she played the final at Roland Garros and reached the semifinals at Wimbledon, but this year she was eliminated in the early stages of the two tournaments.

In the semifinals, the Romanian will play against Italy’s Flavia Pennetta, who defeated Czech Petra Kvitova after a very intense match. In the other semifinal, the world’s number one Serena Williams plays against Italy’s Roberta Vinci.

Simona Halep could thus meet Serena Williams in the tournament’s final.
