Romanian city raises EUR 122,000 flag visible from Ukraine

13 March 2015

The municipality of Tulcea will spend RON 500,000 (some EUR 112,000) on a flag that will be visible from Ukraine, despite some of the locals' opposition. Located in southeastern Romania, Tulcea is the gateway to Romania's Danube Delta.

The authorities plan to hoist the flag in Tudor Vladimirescu suburb, over the Danube, reports local Digi24. Tulcea's residents and tourists who go to the city’s beach will be able to admire the national flag hoisted on a 40-meter mast.

The local council voted the project and included it in the 2015 budget.

The mast will be made of metal, on a concrete foundation, and will be lit at night. The flag will be 120 sqm and will be visible from cruise ships sailing on the Danube, as well as from the Izmail port in Ukraine.

However, Tulcea residents don’t agree with the way the City Hall spends this money. They say that authorities could have used it for hospitals or for fixing the roads.

The authorities are currently waiting the feasibility study and hope to raise the flag this year.
