Six medals for Romania at the International Math Olympiad in Thailand
Romania’s team won six medals at this year’s edition of the International Math Olympiad (IMO) organized in Thailand between July 4 and July 16.
Simona Diaconu, the only girl in Romania’s team, won the gold medal. She got a score of 27 out of 42 and was 32nd in the competition's individual ranking. She got a silver medal at last year's Mathematics Olympiad and several other prizes in international maths competitions. Simona Diaconu graduated from the International Informatics College in Bucharest this summer.
Theodor Andrei Andronache, Marius Ioan Bocanu, Ciprian Mircea Bonciocat, and Stefan Spataru got silver medals. Andrei Bogdan Puiu won the bronze.
Romania's team got 132 points and was 13th in the competition's ranking, out of a total of 104 participating countries. Romania's result was also the best among EU countries. The US ranked first with 185 points, followed by China (181), and the Republic of Korea (161).
A total of 577 students from 104 countries competed in this year’s edition of the Olympiad. IMO is an annual Olympiad for high school students and is the oldest of the International Science Olympiads. The first IMO was held in Romania in 1959.
