South and South-East of Romania snow-bound under Code Orange: roads closed, power outages

The South and South – East regions of Romania are again under a Code Orange for snow and blizzard, according to meteorologists. Vrancea and Buzau counties are among the most affected. Roads were closed in both counties, while several villages in Buzau are under power outage. Capital city Bucharest is also under the Orange Code for blizzard starting Sunday, February 5, 18:00. this comes after the capital saw a rare phenomenon during the last days: freezing rain.

It will continue to snow on the South and South – East of Romania until Wednesday (February 8), when temperatures will start to go down below freezing level again. The wind will blow with 80 km per hour and visibility will drop below 50 meters.

Other 17 counties in the country are under Code Yellow for snow and blizzard. Overall, 250 villages were effected by the weather, 37 of which are isolated as roads were closed down. Over 200 villages experienced power outages. The A2 highway (the Sun Highway) was closed down, while 19 national roads were also closed.

Counties under Code Orange: Mehedinţi, Gorj, Dolj, Olt, Vâlcea, Argeş, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Dâmboviţa, Prahova, Ilfov, Ialomiţa, Călăraşi, Constanţa, Tulcea, Brăila, Buzău, Vrancea and Galaţi.

The bad weather hit Romania more than a week ago, when it started snowing heavily and temperatures reached record lows. So far, over 30 people died in the county, adding to the Europeans death toll caused by bad weather and low temperatures.
