Spanish CaixaBank shuts down operations in Romania

Spanish banking group CaixaBank, known as La Caixa until 2011, has shut down its operations in Romania, according to the local media.

However, CaixaBank is one of the major shareholders of Austrian Erste, which controls BCR. The Spanish group holds some nine percent of Erste’s shares and has concluded a partnership agreement with the Austrian group which allows it to indirectly support its customers in the region, including Romania, reports local daily Zf.ro.

The local branch of CaixaBank had a net profit of RON 8.6 million in 2012 (some EUR 1.9 million).
