Speed skater Emil Imre wins Romania's first gold at Youth Winter Olympics in Brasov

emil imre speed skatingRomanian speed skater Emil Imre has just stuck gold at the European Youth Winter Olympics in Brasov. After winning the silver in the short track speed skating 500 m event, he won the 1,000 m race to give Romania its first gold of the games.

Emil is 17 years old and also competed in the 1,500 m short track event, in which he came sixth. He was involved in an accident during the 1,500 m event, which killed off his chances of a medal. “I wanted to be among the top three at this discipline. Although I fell in the1,500 m, pushed by a French athlete, now I've taken my revenge and I defeated him. I’m glad I won this medal for Romania, even though it was very hard,” said Imre after taking the silver medal in the 500 m short track speed skating.

The boys ski jumping at the new Rasnov ski jump and facilities has also been on today. Slovenia dominated the event, with Prevc Cene and Lanisek Anze taking gold and silver, while Austrian Thomas Hofer came third.

The European Youth Winter Olympics are on all week in the Brasov area, finishing on Friday, February 22. Various venues are in use, including purpose built ski jumping facility in Rasnov, the Poiana Brasov ski resort and the the arena in Brasov city.
