S&T lands European health card production and distribution contract in Romania

06 September 2013

S&T Romania is set to produce and distribute European health insurance cards in Romania after it won the EUR 500,000 contract as the sole bidder.

The National Health Insurance House chose to award the contract via negotiation without publishing a participation announcement beforehand.

The winner cannot subcontract the production and distribution of the health cards.

S&T Romania was set up in 1994 as a subsidiary of S&T System Integration & Technology Distribution AG from Austria and offers IT consultancy, as well as developing and implementing personalized solutions.

In July 2013, 190 million Europeans held a health card, which allows them to get emergency medical care when traveling across the EU, in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland.

The European health insurance card is a free card that gives access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 28 EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, under the same conditions and at the same cost, or free in some countries, as people insured in that country.

The card is however not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any private healthcare or costs such as a return flight to the home country or lost/stolen property. It also doesn't cover costs if traveling for the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment and does not guarantee free services.

A list and galleries of all health insurance cards issued by EU countries here.
