Bucharest to divert freight trains, relocate regional bus stations

20 July 2017

Twenty-one Bucharest stations for regional buses could be relocated to the outskirts of the city, Economica.net reported.

Mayor Gabriela Firea and Transport Minister Răzvan Cuc decided to establish a work group that will look into the legal solutions that would allow the relocation.

A total of 2,440 daily rides in the Bucharest – Ilfov area go through the 21 Bucharest stations for regional buses.

The two officials also agreed that freight trains should no longer use the railways transiting the capital.

“As you very well know, no European capital is transited by freight trains. Following an analysis performed by the specialists who worked on the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, the conclusion was that this type of transport needs to be moved at the outskirts of the city,” the mayor said.

A temporary solution for this problem would be a new schedule for these trains, so as not to transit the capital at peak hours. By September this new schedule should be in place, the City Hall said. Meanwhile, the Transport Minister said the railway at the outskirts of the capital will be upgraded by the end of October so that freight trains can start using it.
