26 August 2014

Over half of Romanians who work legally – or about 3 million people earn up to RON 1,000 – or EUR 222 a month. One third of Romania’s employed people make up to RON 850 – or some EUR 188 a month, according to data from the Labor Ministry, quoted by Capital.ro.

At the other end of the scale, some 300,000 people earn more than RON 5,000 – or some EUR 1,111 a month, and some 27,000 people earn more than RON 15,000 – or some EUR 3,333 a month. In Romania, 4.4 million people work with full – time labour contracts, while 700,000 have part – time labour contracts, and 120,000 work based on royalties contracts. In the latter category, two thirds make less than EUR 222 a month too.

It is estimated that some 1.5 million Romanians work without any contract in place, according to the Fiscal Council’s calculations. The state stands to lose the income tax and the social insurances, which represent about 70 to 80% of the gross salaries.
