Study: More bikes in Romania’s villages than in the urban areas

22 August 2014

The latest GfK Cars & Drivers study reveals that most of the bikes in Romania are found in the rural areas, where, for 20% of the population, this is the only means of locomotion. Banat-Crisana-Maramures and Muntenia regions rank first when it comes to the number of people using bikes, while the capital city and Dobrogea are among the areas with the lowest number of bikers.

A total of 35% of rural inhabitants own a bike, compared to just 21% of people living in the urban areas.

Also, more new bikes were sold in Romania in recent years, compared to the number of new cars. According to Coliped, a total of 380,000 bikes were sold in the country in 2012, compared to just 70,000 new cars.

The study also reveals that 30% of the Romanians who own a car also have a bike.

The data for this study were collected in June and are part of Cars & Drivers study, conducted monthly by GfK.
