Supermarkets in Romania could allocate 50% of their space to local food
Local supermarkets may be obliged to provide exhibition space to local food products representing at least 50% of their food retail space, according to a draft project submitted at the Parliament by ten MPs.
Local food producers should get 20% of the retail space to display their goods and shouldn’t pay more than 5% of the products’ value in fees to supermarkets.
The bill’s initiators thus aim to support local food producers and offer consumers access to fresh products from traceable sources.
According to a study from last year conducted by iSense Solutions, half of Romanians are willing to make an extra effort, such as driving a longer distance, to buy Romanian products from supermarkets and hypermarkets.
