Swedish group Skanska builds German retailer Lidl’s headquarters in Romania

09 March 2016

Lidl Romania, one of the biggest local supermarket chains, will move its local headquarters to a new office compound in Bucharest, in 2017. Swedish construction group Skanska has already started working on this project in January 2016.

The compound will include two buildings and 12,500 sqm of modern offices as well as 2,400 sqm of retail space for a new Lidl store.

“This is an innovating and complex project that will implement the most advanced construction technologies. The building compound, which will accommodate the new offices and a store, is projected and certified to be as eco-friendly as possible,” said Ionut Vasiu, Real Estate Director Lidl Romania.

The building will include green and even recycled materials. It will use natural refrigerant for cooling and geothermal energy for heating. The compound will also have solar panels for energy and will use LED lighting. It will also have a charging station for electric cars.

Skanska started its operations in Romania in 2011. So far, Skanska’s local construction division, which is managed by Richard Burleigh, only worked on the group’s own projects, respectively the Green Court office compound in northern Bucharest.

Skanska has already sold two of the three buildings in the Green Court compound and plans to start new developments.
