Tennis Academy opens in Bucharest after EUR 1 mln investment

27 November 2014

The Tennis Academy within Lia Manoliu sports compound was recently opened in Romania’s capital after a RON 4.5 million (some EUR 1 million) investment, conducted by the Bucharest Municipality.

The new Tennis Academy has six courts with a total of over 1,100 seats and was built on a surface of 11,700 sqm.

The new location mainly addresses to students and sports schools that may conclude cooperation agreements with the municipality for the organization of tennis classes, according to Bucharest mayor Sorin Oprescu.

The Tennis Academy will also be opened to the public and access tariffs will be established next spring.

Bucharest’s Municipality also wants to build a multifunctional sports hall, Olympic-size swimming pools, a skating rink and a hotel in the “Lia Manoliu” compound, according to Bucharest’s mayor Sorin Oprescu. The total investments in the new facilities will be close to EUR 100 million.

“The Municipality has decided to transform the Lia Manoliu complex into an area for performance sport, mass sport and large cultural events, which should put Bucharest on the map for large international events,” Oprescu said.

The sports complex also includes the National Arena, Romania’s largest football stadium, for which the state spent some EUR 235 million. The National Arena hosted the Europa League final in 2012 and will also host three matches of the European Football Championship in 2020.
