10 September 2015

More than 20,500 babies were born in Romania in July this year, which is close to the three-year high of 21,000 registered in August 2012, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS). The number of babies born in July was also 14% higher compared to the same month of last year.

Romania registered a positive natural growth in July, for the first time in almost two years, as the number of births was 114 higher than the number of deaths (20,540 compared to 20,426).

However, the overall trend remains negative. In the first eight months of this year, 113,190 babies were born in Romania and 157,834 people died. Thus, the natural decline was almost 45,000.

Last year, Romania had a natural decline of almost 70,000 people, and the resident population dropped by some 86,000 people, to 19.86 million (as of January 1, 2015).
