The only ice church in Romania opens at the end of January
The only ice church in Romania, located near the ice hotel at Balea Lake, will be hallowed and opened for tourists on January 29, according to the owners of the ice complex.
Romanian Orthodox priests, as well as Greco-Catholic, Romani-Catholic and Evangelic priests, will join in the hallowing ceremony.
The church is open to all tourists who want to pray and can also host weddings or christenings.
The ice church at Balea lake was first built in the 2006-2007 winter season, and since then it has been rebuilt every year, just as the ice hotel. This season, the ice hotel was opened just before Christmas.
Both the ice hotel and the ice church usually stay open until April, when the weather gets warmer, and they melt.
These ice buildings are located in the Fagaras mountains, close to the highest point of the famous Transfagarasan road, at more than 2,000 meters. The road is closed during winter, but tourists can get to the Balea Lake by cable car, which they take from Balea Cascada (Balea waterfall).
