Thirteen Romanian universities in Times Higher Education 2021 ranking

Thirteen Romanian universities feature in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021, covering more than 1,500 universities across 93 countries and regions.

The ranking is based on 13 performance indicators grouped into five areas: Teaching (the learning environment); Research (volume, income, and reputation); Citations (research influence); International outlook (staff, students, and research); and Industry Income (knowledge transfer).

The Bucharest University of Economic Studies ranks in the 601-800 band, while the Iuliu Haţieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca is in the 801-1000 band. 

Eleven local universities rank in the 1000+ band: Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iași, Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, University of Bucharest, University of Galați, George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Târgu Mureș, Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iași, the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, the Polytechnic University of Timişoara, the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, the Transilvania University of Brașov, and the West University of Timişoara.

The University of Oxford tops the rankings for the fifth consecutive year. It is followed by Stanford University, Harvard University, the California Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Cambridge, the University of California, Berkeley, Yale University, Princeton University, and the University of Chicago.

The US has a record eight places in the top 10, after the University of California, Berkeley climbed six places to seventh. There are 141 first-time entrants in the rankings this year, topped by France’s recently merged Paris-Saclay University. India has the highest number of new entries (14) and a record number of ranked institutions (63).
