An urban bee, with women dressed in Romanian traditional blouses, paintings, music and dance will mark the Sanziene holiday in Romania, on the night between June 23 and 24, at the Galateca contemporary art gallery in Bucharest. The traditional mid-summer celebration of the Sanziene also marks the international day of the Romanian blouse, called IE.

Concerts by Maria Răducanu, Lorena Oltean, Helen, Jazzappella, Amir Heidarhodaee, Maria Chifu, as well as dance sessions by Lucian Martin & Alexandra Poenaru will be organized during the evening. The event at Galateca will start at 20,00 on June 23. Dress up in IE or in other traditional clothes for the event!

By tradition, the Sanziene night is a magical night, when the skies open and the two worlds, the real and the magical, communicate. It is the only moment of the year when the fern’s white flower is believed to bloom, only to disappear with the sunrise. As the folk tale goes, who sees this flower will have the ability to read thoughts and find hidden treasures. On the same night, the traditional belief goes, animals can speak in human tongue, and can share the world’s secrets to all who listen.

Sanziene is not just the name of this holiday, but also the name of a plant (bedstraw), also used as a medicinal plant. Women make wreaths with these plants, and place them under their pillows, to dream of their future husband.
