Turkish businessman risks life sentence after killing Romanian police officer

Turkish businessman Abdullah Atas will be charged with aggravated murder and risks life in prison, after the police officer he hit with his car at the beginning of August died on Friday, August 21, according to Mediafax.

Police officer Gheorghe Ionescu was badly injured by the Turkish businessman on August 2, during a night traffic control mission in Bucharest’s Pipera neighborhood. He waved the man to stop, but instead of doing so Abdullah Atas accelerated his car and ran him over.

The policeman was carried on the hood of the car for some 350 meters before being thrown off. He suffered multiple head trauma and other injuries. He had multiple surgeries at the Floreasca Emergency Hospital, but remained in a coma, and passed away after three weeks.

Abdullah Atas was arrested after the incident. The investigators found that he had a blood alcohol level of 1.65 permille and was speeding with up to 200 kilometers per hour.
