Two dead in Romania after bee swarm turns aggressive

07 May 2018

Two people died and one entered anaphylactic shock after being attacked by bees, in the locality of Aldeni, in the Cernăteşti commune, in eastern Romania’s Buzău county, Mediafax reported. The accident happened as the bees turned aggressive after the hives they were transported in toppled down.

The beekeepers started driving with the hives unfastened which caused them to topple down, Petrică Mârzea, the mayor of the Cernăteşti commune, told Mediafax. At the same time, they transported the bees when it was warm outside, even though they knew they were not supposed to do so.

“It looks like a beekeepers’ negligence. Bees should not be transported when it is warm, during daytime. I don’t know why they were this late, they knew they weren’t allowed to. One of the three man was ill, he got sick; the other two attempted to save him and wanted to leave by car, forgetting that another one had unfastened the hives. When they attempted to drive off, the hives fell down,” he explained.

One of the three men was found dead next to the car transporting the hives, with bee stings, while another one died in the ambulance, on the way to the hospital. The third man reached the Buzău hospital in anaphylactic shock.

The bees were gathered by other beekeepers in the area and taken to the village outskirts.
