Two Lottery Tickets is highest earning Romanian film in 2016

Two Lottery Tickets (Doua Lozuri), a comedy directed by Paul Negoescu, brought in the highest earnings in 2016 among Romanian releases, with a total of EUR 534,000, according to data from the National Film Center quoted by cineuropa.org.

The film, which follows three men as they attempt to recover their winning lottery ticket after it was stolen, was made on a budget of EUR 30,000. It stars Dorian Boguță, Dragoș Bucur, and Alexandru Papadopol.

The comedy #Selfie 69, directed by Cristina Iacob, came in second with earnings of approximately EUR 510,000.

Other top earning Romanian films of 2016 were Graduation of Cannes-awarded director Cristian Mungiu at EUR 145,000, the thriller Dogs by Bogdan Mirică at EUR 71,000, Sieranevada by Cristi Puiu at EUR 68,000, and Illegitimate by Adrian Sitaru at EUR 20,000.

Admissions to domestic films doubled from 2015 to 2016 to reach 428,000, representing earnings of EUR 1.45 million for domestic films last year. Two Lottery Tickets and #Selfie 69 take up some 72% of this amount.

However, they are not ranked among the 30 best-performing releases in Romania. Locally-made films had a market share of only 3.39% in 2016, up from 1.90% in 2015.
