Two people detained for looting Romanian Baile Herculane resort and airport

Prosecutors from the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) arrested two people in a case related to the looting of two companies, namely the Caransebes airport and the Baile Herculane resort.

The damage is estimated at over EUR 27 million. Dozens of buildings - hotels, restaurants, thermal baths, swimming pools - as well as dozens of plots have been seized to recover the damages.

Dorin Marescu, a lawyer in the Bucharest Bar, was detained for 24 hours. He is charged with creating an organized criminal group, complicity to abuse of office, and complicity to embezzlement. The other defendant Iancu Hrelescu was charged with complicity to abuse of office, and complicity to embezzlement. He was also detained.

Two other defendants, Petru Adrian Andritoiu and Ion Sima, are prosecuted but have not been detained.

Between December 2007 and August 2008, the defendants created a criminal group that aimed to acquire the major assets of the airport and the resort, according to prosecutors.
