05 January 2018

The United States will invest over USD 200 million to revamp and build new military structures in Europe as part of its efforts to deter the Russian expansion, reports Airforcetimes.com.

The list of military objectives to be revamped this year also includes the Campia Turzii military air base in Romania, which will undergo USD 3 million revamping work, according to the Pentagon’s budget for 2018. The U.S. will also modernize air bases in Estonia, Slovakia, Latvia, Hungary, Iceland, Luxembourg and Norway.

The funds are part of the European Deterrence Initiative, or EDI. Formerly known as the European Reassurance Initiative, the EDI was initiated several months after the Russian annexation of Crimea and subsequent violence in eastern Ukraine, where still today Russian forces back Ukrainian separatists.
