Uber launches in second Romanian city, offers promotional tariffs
Ridesharing service Uber has become available in Cluj-Napoca, central Romania, starting August 4.
Cluj is the second Romanian city where the car ride service operates, after Bucharest. However, Uber only launched its UberX basic service in Cluj-Napoca, while Bucharesters can choose from three services, namely UberX, UberSELECT, and Uber Child Seat.
UberX is currently available at promotional prices in Cluj-Napoca. Thus, the base fee is RON 1.7, the price per minute is RON 0.2, and the fee per km is RON 1.7. The minimum fare is RON 7, and the cancellation fee (if the passenger cancels the trip after five minutes) is RON 6. However, those who haven’t tried the service before can enjoy a free first ride, up to RON 40, if they make an Uber account and use the promocode UberinCluj.
By comparison, the UberX base fee in Bucharest is RON 1.45, according to data available on Uberestimator.com. The cost per minute is RON 0.26, and the fee per km is RON 1.45.
Romanian director Tudor Giurgiu, best known for his Legaturi bolnavicioase (Love Sick) and De ce eu? (Why me?) films, was the first rider who rode the Uber in Cluj. Giurgiu is also the president of Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF), one of the largest such festivals in Romania, organized in Cluj-Napoca.
