Uber, Taxify sued by cab association in Bucharest
An association and several taxi companies in Bucharest sued the local subsidiaries of US ride sharing company Uber and Estonian peer Taxify for unfair competition.
The legal action mirrors a dispute that the taxi drivers in Cluj-Napoca initiated against Uber.
"The association sued Uber and Taxify because, unlike taxi drivers, the drivers of the two companies do not have cash registers, they do not have to renew the technical inspection for their cars each six months, they do not need medical tests and psychological assessments, and other technical permits,” representatives of the association explained, according to local Profit.ro.
The taxi drivers in Cluj-Napoca won in a first instance the case against Uber last summer, but the court trial continues.
In December 2017, the EU Court of Justice decided, in a process initiated by an association of taxi drivers in Barcelona, that the services provided by the ridesharing company Uber are classified as a "transport service" and the task of regulating the conditions the provision of such services rests with the Member States.
