More than 1,700 refugee students and preschoolers from Ukraine have applied for enrollment as guest students in Romanian schools and kindergartens, and almost 1,500 of them have already been accepted, education minister Sorin Cimpeanu announced on Friday, April 8.

A total of 1,769 applications were registered by April 8, of which 570 were for preschoolers and 1,199 for students, according to data quoted by local Agerpres. 1,497 children have been assigned/enrolled as guest students in local schools and kindergartens, of which 527 preschoolers and 970 students.

Data from the Romanian Border Police released on April 10 said that more than 677,000 Ukrainian citizens entered Romania since the Russian invasion started in Ukraine on February 24. However, most transit the country, travelling further to other countries, mainly Western Europe.

Most of the refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine are women and children.
