Unemployment rate reaches lowest level in 23 years in Romania

The unemployment rate in Romania dropped to 5.3% in March, down 0.1% compared to the previous month.

The number of unemployed reached 486,000 people, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

It was the lowest level since 1994. By comparison, Romania had about 561,000 unemployed in March last year.

The unemployment rate remained higher among men, namely 5.7%, whereas the unemployment rate among women totalled 4.9% at the end of March. Among adult people (aged 25-74), the unemployment rate reached 4.3%.

The number of unemployed dropped below 500,000 starting October last year. It continued to go down during the following months, except for December 2016 and February this year.
