Romanian reformist party USR aims at consolidating right-wing coalition with experienced allies

19 June 2023

Romania’s reformist party USR, seen by voters as the main opposition party according to the latest electoral poll, decided during a congress organized on June 17 to form a right-wing coalition ahead of the 2024 elections.

A total of 647 USR delegates voted for the mandate proposed by Cătălin Drulă, with only five votes against and 48 abstentions, USR announced in a press release quoted by Hotnews.ro.

But the main candidates for the coalition are the Right Force of former prime minister and Liberal leader Ludovic Orban and the Popular Movement (PMP) founded by former President Traian Basescu (no longer an active member of the party). Both politicians made significant positive contributions, but their resources seem to have reached their limits.

Now out of the ruling coalition, the ethnic Hungarian party UDMR (a member of the European Popular Party) is a possible candidate as well.

About 800 delegates from the country attended the USR Congress on June 17 in Bucharest, and among the guests were UDMR President Kelemen Hunor, General Mayor of Bucharest Nicusor Dan, Popular Movement Party President Eugen Tomac and Right Force President Ludovic Orban.
