Veteran directors and French black and white film 'The Artist' honored at the Golden Globes

17 January 2012

French black and white film 'The Artist' got the best of the Golden Globes at last night's ceremony, picking up 12 nominations and winning in three categories. Old talent also got a look in with veteran directors Martin Scorcese, Woody Allen and Steven Spielberg carving up the Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Animated Feature awards between them for 'Hugo,' 'Midnight in Paris' and 'The Adventures of Tin Tin.'

George Clooney took the Best Actor award for his part in 'The Descendants,' while Merly Streep's portrayal of former British PM Margaret Thatcher earned her the Best Actress globe. In the Comedy and Musical category, Best Actor went to Jean Dujardin for 'The Artist' and Best Actress to Michelle Williams for 'My Week with Marilyn.'

Aging Hollywood legend Christopher Plummer received the Best Supporting actor award. British comedian Ricky Gervais presented the awards for the second year running. His comments were considered a little toned down and less scathing that last year, but Gervais still dropped a good few lines that would have elicited a punch in the face in most British bars.
