Almost 100 villages in Romania affected by floods over the weekend
The heavy rains that hit Romania at the end of last week caused floods in many rural areas, almost 100 villages being affected in 19 counties.
More than 250 houses were flooded and over 760 people were saved from risk situations, according to the Interior Ministry. However, four people lost their lives, including a child who was struck by lightning and a man who wanted to cross a river on horseback.
A railway bridge in Brasov county collapsed and the railway connection between Brasov and Intorsura Buzaului was closed.
Interior minister Carmen Dan said on Sunday evening that the situation has stabilized. She added that Romania may ask the European Commission to activate the EU solidarity fund mechanism to help people in the areas affected by the floods.
