Violinist Alexandru Tomescu takes Stradivarius violin on fifth tour in Romania
Romanian violinist Alexandru Tomescu will be on tour with his Stradivarius violin across Romania between May 7 and May 29, in an event called “Obsesii” (Obsessions).
Tomescu will perform the music of Eugene Ysaye (The sonatas for solo violin) and it will be accompanied by the pantomime of the actors Ana Pelpine and Paul Cimpoieru. The event will thus combine non-verbal theatre and music.
This is Tomescu's fifth tour with the Stradivarius violin. He received the violin in 2007, when it was awarded to him following a contest, with the right to use it for five years, so this could be his farewell Stradivarius tour. The violin belonged to Ion Voicu, and his family donated it to Romania's Culture Minister.
Alexandru Tomescu is known for having played the violin in unusual places: in front of a building in ruins, in a metro station, in a forest and to raise funds for various causes.
The name Stradivarius is associated with violins built by members of the Stradivari family, particularly Antonio Stradivari. According to their reputation, the quality of their sound has defied attempts to explain or reproduce.
Alexandru Tomescu with his Stradivarius Elder-Voicu 1702 violin will be performing “Obsesii”(Obsessions) on a tour that will be in Braşov – May 7, Târgu Mureş – May 8, Cluj-Napoca – May 10, Oradea –May 11, Arad – May 13, Timişoara –May 14, Craiova –May 16, Ploieşti – May 17, Galaţi –May 19, Tulcea – May 20, Constanţa – May 22, Focşani – May 23, Bacău – May 24, Iaşi – May 26, Botoşani – May 27 and Bucharest – May 29.
