Vodafone Germany job cuts could open new positions in Romania

16 April 2013

Staff cuts by Vodafone in Germany could result in extra jobs in Romania. Bloomberg news organization obtained an internal letter from the CEO of Vodafone Germany Jens Schulte-Bockum that says 500 jobs will be axed in the country.

As well as Romania, jobs should be created in India, but the CEO's letter doesn't put a figure on the potential numbers of jobs in the two countries.

Schulte-Bockum says that commercial pressures have been on the rise and that regulation of the industry “has been hostile to investment for years,” in the letter quoted by Bloomberg. There are also plans to cut entry level salaries at the company, according to the letter.

The news follows shortly after an announcement from Vodafone Romania that it had recently launched the Danubius Regional Network Operations Center in Bucharest, which is currently managing incidents for Vodafone Italy, Vodafone Greece, Vodafone Germany and Vodafone Romania.

Starting April 2013, the Danubius Center team, comprising 250 Romanian engineers, will also manage the operator’s networks in three other countries, namely Vodafone Netherlands, Vodafone Czech Republic, and Vodafone Albania.

“Choosing to operate the Vodafone Regional Center in Romania is an extraordinary achievement, that honors us and confirms the country’s human and technological potential,” said Inaki Berroeta, President and CEO, Vodafone Romania.

The total number of clients that communicate in the seven Vodafone networks monitored from the Regional Center in Bucharest amounts to 90 million. Danubius Center is located in two offices in Bucharest – in Pipera and Avrig.

Vodafone Romania, part of Vodafone Group PLC., had service revenues of GBP 143 million (some EUR 177 million) in the quarter ended on December 31, 2012. In November last year, the telecom operator launched 4G services in Romania.
