Romanians traveling to dangerous places will receive warning SMS from the Foreign Ministry

29 October 2012

Romanians traveling to dangerous countries will receive a text message warning from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when they arrive. Foreign Affairs Minister Titus Corlăţean launched the new service today (October 29 ) in partnership with mobile phone companies Orange, Vodafone, Cosmote and RCS&RDS. Romania's PM Victor Ponta also attended the event and sent the very first text message warning during the proceedings.

Romanians traveling in high risk areas will receive an SMS detailing where the nearest diplomatic and consular services are and how to get in touch with them.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not release a list of exactly which countries would be covered by the scheme, nor any further details on the contents of the warning text messages – whether, for example, information on local threats, such as kidnappers or revolutionary guerrilla groups, would also be included.

Representatives of the Foreign Ministry, the National Broadcasting Council, the mobile telephony Regulatory Authority and the phone companies all attended the launch event.
