Western Romania city, most demanded local air travel destination

31 May 2017

Timisoara, a city in western Romania, is the air travel destination most in demand in the country, daily Ziarul Financiar (ZF) reported, quoted by Mediafax.

Over 54,000 people flew the Bucharest – Timisoara route in the first four months of this year, double compared to the similar period of 2016.

The route has been so far serviced by state-owned Tarom and low-cost carrier Ryanair but now Romanian low-cost carrier Blue Air is also adding a route to the city, starting June 15. The Ryanair flights contributed the most to the doubling in the number of passengers, ZF reported.

Throughout the summer season, 34 planes are expected to fly this route weekly.

“In between January and April 2017, 111,806 passengers flew to and from Bucharest. By comparison, between January and April of last year, 54,628 passengers flew to and from Bucharest,” representatives of the Timisoara Airport told ZF.

The Timisoara – Bucharest route is poorly covered by road connections, while the train ones take more than 8 hours.

Timisoara is an important business center in western Romania, and many multinationals have headquarters in the city, including Continental, Atos, Alcatel Lucent or EY.

The Traian Vuia International Airport in Timisoara announced this February plans to invest EUR 10 million over the next two years to add two terminals for Foreign Arrivals and Foreign Departures and modernize the building’s existing façade.
