Work underway on Romania' s Ice Hotel: Christmas opening planned

07 December 2011

The first team of workers has begun the construction of Romania's only ice hotel, located at over 2,000 meters altitude in the Fagaras Mountains. Each of the 2,000 ‘ice bricks’ used for building the hotel is a meter long and is cut from blocks of ice extracted from Balea Lake. Weather permitting, the Ice Hotel will open its icy doors to guests on December 25 this year.

A single room in the Ice Hotel costs RON 150 per person (about EUR 35), while a double room will cost RON 300 (around EUR 70). This year, the hotel’s theme will be ‘Ice Sounds’ and each room will be named after a music genre. Moreover, a separate complex of igloos will be built next to the hotel.

The first Ice Hotel was built in 2006 and has been a yearly destination ever since. At the time, it was the only ice hotel in the Southeast Europe. The tourism marketing project for the Ice Hotel was initiated by Arnold G. Klingeis.
